Mr Marcel celebrates 25 years in Los Angeles.

Mr Marcel, La Vie Est Belle.

Step inside Monsieur Marcel and you’ll be greeted by employees wearing black shirts and aprons with the phrase, “La vie est belle chez Monsieur Marcel,” a motto the popular gourmet market and eatery has lived by for 25 years. A destination for European transplants, neighborhood locals, famous chefs, and tourists, this “Disneyland for foodies,” as it’s been called, can be found (or heard, by the sound of live accordion music on some nights) on the southeast corner of the Farmers Market at Fairfax and Third.

A destination for European transplants, neighborhood locals, famous chefs, and tourists, this “Disneyland for foodies,” as it’s been called, can be found (or heard, by the sound of live accordion music on some nights) on the southeast corner of the Farmers Market at Fairfax and Third.

“It’s named after my papa,” says owner Stephane Strouk, who first tested L.A.’s hospitality waters with a modest crepe stand in 1993. “Through the years, we’ve added to the overall guest experience. We now have a world-class gourmet market, a wine shop, a traditional European café, and a Mediterranean-inspired seafood market,” he says, referring to the latest addition to the still-growing operation.

In the spirited spirits department, award-winning Bordeaux, pinots, Sancerres, rosés, and other wines are on offer. The aisles are filled with an artfully presented collection of premium olive oils, aged balsamic vinegars, uncommon condiments, specialty giftware items, and hand-selected tablecloths from Provence. You’ll find handmade small-batch jams, crackers, cookies, and snacks, or French buckwheat flour for authentic crepes, and if you enjoyed your salad in the brasserie, you can find the dressing, Lucile’s Dijon vinaigrette, at the shop. It’s named for Strouk’s mother and based on her original recipe. Monsieur Marcel also stocks one of the best collection of chocolates in town. It’s got you covered, soup to nuts.

“We’re on a continuous, almost obsessive mission to discover foods from around the world that you wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else in L.A.,” says Katy Strouk, the other half of the mama-and-papa operation and the market’s head buyer. It’s an obsession that shows.

Mr Marcel Seafood Market.

At the seafood market, guests can select a wild-caught Scottish salmon or sea bass fillet to take home or have prepared to order at the restaurant. Locally sourced seafood arrives every day, and skilled fishmongers prep and display it beautifully on ice. They also proffer lobsters, crabs, shrimp, oysters, and caviar—a sea of selection. Catering services including shellfish platters, oyster bars, and off-site grilling for backyards and beaches are available.

Mr Marcel, The Cheese House.

It wouldn’t be a classic French experience without cheese, and Monsieur Marcel knows its fromage. Curate your charcuterie from scores of international cheeses, savory meats, foie gras, patés, fresh truffles, tapenades, roasted rosemary almonds, and tasty quince and pear accoutrements. The house-made fig-apricot-walnut chutney and the caviar cream cheese are local favorites. Pick up a knockout platter for your next meet and greet, with some of MM’s crusty freshly baked baguettes for a foundation. Grab-and-go meal options like fresh salads and hot or cold sandwiches are also on the menu.

Mr Marcel, The Perfect Gift Basquet.

There’s a long-held belief by the Monsieur Marcel team that nothing creates a lasting memory better than the gift of food. Customized gift baskets are available any day of the year, but the market really shines with its holiday offerings of traditional Italian panettone and pandoro, French pain d’épices spice cakes and bûches de Noël, British mincemeat pies and puddings, German stollen, mulled wines, and holiday jams. And you won’t want to miss one of the sweetest and swankiest collections of edible stocking stuffers in town.
