Chef Curtis Stone: Rolling in the Deep
Curtis Stone is an Australian chef and restaurateur with food concepts that have been exciting diners in Los Angeles for years. Recognizable from hosting and competing on television cooking shows. Stone honed his talents in kitchens around the globe, most notably working in Michelin-starred restaurants in London under renowned Chef Marco Pierre White. During his cooking journey, he learned the importance of working with only the best local and seasonal ingredients. Respect for ingredients has become a driving force at both of his restaurants. Yet before all of this training and celebrity, Stone was a young boy learning to cook under his first teacher, his beloved grandmother Maude. Named in her honor, his first solo restaurant opened in 2014 and pays beautiful homage to his granny. A small, impeccably decorated dining room with a visible kitchen makes you feel like you’re in a home of love. Delicate seasonal set menus are served with mismatched china and silverware, and after rave reviews, Stone embarked on opening a second restaurant with his brother Luke in July of 2016.
The Gwen Effect
As with Maude, Gwen Butcher Shop & Restaurant activates all of your senses, but in an entirely different way. Upon entering, guests are welcomed with a visual feast. Locally sourced meat sits in cabinets, hangs in glass-enclosed dry age rooms, roasts over fire pits, and cooks in an open kitchen, all expertly orchestrated by Stone and his team. Displays contain pâtés, terrines, rillettes, salami, chorizo, and other charcuteries made on-site daily. The beautiful Art Deco dining room complements the showcased meat wonderfully, creating a fully immersive dining experience where patrons savor a meal surrounded by its disparate ingredients. True to Stone’s style, seasonal side dishes accompany the meal, sourced from the Hollywood Farmers Market just steps away. Chef Stone’s personality, attention to detail, and love of food shine in both of his restaurants. A man of many hats, we can’t wait to see what he cooks up next.
