Domaine de Manville, a Palatial Provençal Estate of the Arts
The Domaine de Manville was once a progressive farming compound devoted to agriculture, with sheepfolds, barns, and rustic outbuildings dotting its 250 acres. The conversion of the estate into five-star boutique hotel accommodations (complete with a sprawling, naturalistic golf course, soaring atriums, shaded interior courtyards, a spa to disappear in, and nine private villas) was accomplished by architect Mireille Pellen and interior designer Annie Zeau. They combined luxed-up accouterments with traditional construction techniques in order to maintain the historic rural charms of its location in Les Baux de Provence, nestled in the Alpilles mountains.
Lying between the Rhône and Durance rivers, not far from La Camargue, the Alpilles range crowns the Arles area like a rocky island amidst the plains. The majestic city of Les Baux de Provence has held proudly forth since the Middle Ages. From the ruins of the medieval castle, the views are stunning: Arles, La Camargue, and the southern French plains, and in the distance, the Mediterranean Sea.
The heart of these environs still beats to the drum of daily country life, attentive to the ripening tomatoes, the grape harvests and the olive gatherings, the transhumance of the sheep, and other signs of the changing seasons. Experience it in the highest style and comfort at Domaine de Manville.
